![]() ![]() It's difficult to tell just how large Hawks Cay Resort is, but the 177 rooms, 250 villas, five pools, lagoon, marina, seven restaurants, and full spa are thoughtfully tucked into 60 acres. Couples seeking something a little bit cheaper may want to compare rates at Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection in Key Largo. Note that there's a daily resort fee and some of the activities cost extra. It's a two-hour drive to Miami International Airport, though many guests arrive by boat to the resort's 85-slip marina. There's also a selection of privately owned villas to rent with up to four bedrooms, full kitchens, and laundry facilities. Rooms and suites are contemporary coastal in design and have upscale amenities, outdoor spaces, glossy bathrooms. Seven dining options are equally varied and high quality. A 2018 facelift brought an approachable upscale vibe and there's a seemingly never-ending list of vacation amenities and activities, from a dolphin experience to a full spa to five swimming pools to paddleboarding on the manmade lagoon. There’s also a tiki bar right on the beach.The 177-room Hawks Cay Resort is an upscale, family-friendly property located in tiny Duck Key in the Florida Keys. Restaurants and Bars The Butterfly Café is the resort’s main dining room and features a gorgeous wraparound verandah. Oddly, this room has no closet, though there is a coat rack by the door. (Which smell of ginger!) Beach towels are thoughtfully included, right in the room, ready to grab. ![]() The bathroom is also spacious and has those lovely smelling Archive green tea and willow toiletries. The white and pea green color scheme os fresh and modern, and though the furnishing is minimal the room isn’t without artful embellishment. This is a double queen bed room, with a coffee maker and desk. It’s spacious and airy, and has a small patio. View of a Room 103 is one of the new regular hotel rooms. The cats are friendly and are used to being temporarily adopted by guests. The grounds of the resort are home for a handful of rescue cats, who keep the gecko and lizard population (which are considered pests) under control, nixing the use of chemical culling. The hotel also has a Putting Green by Nicklaus Design. There’s a dock and water sports offered by a third-party vendor. There’s a centrally located outdoor pool, a quieter, adult pool, and a beautiful white sandy beach and a beach volleyball area. Paths connect the lushly planted areas, shading guests and creating an atmosphere of privacy. At the end of 2013, a new building of single, regular hotel rooms opened. Lodging Tranquility Bay opened in 2006 during the fractional ownership boom, when it consisted of two and three-bedroom town homes. Also nearby, there’s more seafood shanties than you’d care to shake a stick at! Water sports include snorkeling on Sombrero Reef, and wake, kite, and paddle boarding at the eco-aware Keys Cable, a burgeoning facility that boasts cable line wake boarding and an in-progress organic farm. Nearby, there’s Boot Key Harbor and its idyllic waterfront homes. Tranquility Bay Resort is located on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Keys. Strickly speaking, the Keys actually curve so at one point Route 1, which carves down the center and joins up the inhabited islands, diverges from its north-south direction. The islands are flanked on the western side by the Gulf of Mexico, on the eastern side lies the Atlantic Ocean, and to the south of the Keys lies Cuba. The Keys stretch south and west of Florida City on the mainland, and are accessed via Miami’s airport and a drive down Route 1 (hardly the most picturesque drive), or via Key West’s airport. High tourist season, of course, revs up the pace. Marathon is, like much of the Keys, a casual, almost sleepy kind of town.
